The Department of Economics at the University of Chicago invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professorship in macroeconomics, monetary economics, or international finance, beginning July 2026. We are seeking scholars whose research engages central questions in modern macroeconomic theory, empirical macroeconomics, or the dynamics of financial markets and institutions. Strong candidates will have a demonstrated capacity for original research, an emerging publication record, and a clear research agenda that complements existing strengths in the department.
Responsibilities include conducting and publishing original research in leading peer-reviewed journals, teaching two undergraduate or graduate courses per academic year, advising doctoral students through dissertation completion, and contributing to the intellectual life of the department through seminars, workshops, and faculty governance. Successful candidates will join a community of scholars committed to rigorous analysis and open inquiry across the social sciences.
Applicants must hold a PhD in Economics or a related discipline by the start of the appointment. We welcome candidates from all subfields of macroeconomics, including but not limited to growth and development, business cycles, monetary policy, sovereign debt, exchange rate dynamics, and the macroeconomic consequences of financial frictions. Methodological diversity is encouraged — theoretical, empirical, structural, and computational approaches are all valued. The department maintains close ties to the Becker Friedman Institute, the Booth School of Business, and the Harris School of Public Policy, offering rich opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Application materials should include a curriculum vitae, a job-market paper, two additional research papers, a research statement (no more than three pages), a teaching statement (no more than two pages), and three letters of recommendation submitted directly by the recommenders. Candidates should also provide evidence of teaching effectiveness where available, including syllabi, student evaluations, or recorded lectures.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to present their research at the department's job-market seminar series in January and February 2026. The selection committee will conduct campus visits during March and April 2026, with offers extended in late spring. The University of Chicago is an Affirmative Action / Equal Opportunity / Disability / Veterans Employer and welcomes applications from candidates of all backgrounds. Applications received by the deadline will receive full consideration; later applications may be considered as schedules permit.
